The best and the brightest of the comics industry gathered at the Baltimore Comic-Con Saturday night for the annual Harvey Awards, a gala event of dinner and discourse on the future of comics, kicked off by none other than Marvel Comics’ Brian Michael Bendis, mastermind of Secret Invasion and writer of “Powers,” “New Avengers” and “Ultimate Spider-Man,” who delivered this year's keynote address.

The writer shared some inspiring words about comics' place of power in Hollywood, imploring the professionals in attendence to never forget that the movie industry needs them more than they need the movie industry. Bendis concluded his remarks by acknowleding that mainstream comics must embrace digital distribution, but also write a "new language" for comics that doesn't simply involve porting existing works into a device like a mobile phone or computer.

The ceremony was then turned over to the evening's host, cartoonist Kyle Baker, the writer and artist of "Special Forces," "I Hate Saturn," "Nat Turner," "Plastic Man" and numerous other works, who introduced the night's presenters and got the show on the road.

Who proved themselves to be the best in their fields and who’s going to have to wait until next year (or the Eisners)? CBR has the full results.
