‘1408’ Writer Tackling ‘Beowulf’ For Syfy

One of history’s oldest epic poems is getting the TV treatment. According to The Hollywood Reporter, 1408 screenwriter Matt Greenberg is penning Beowulf for Syfy and Universal Cable Productions.

Beowulf, an Old English heroic poem, chronicles the titular hero’s adventures as he faces faces the monster Grendel, Grendel’s mother and a dragon, among other challenges. Greenberg’s series will delve deeper into the character’s journey, which spans more than 50 years.

In 2007, Robert Zemeckis took a stab at the tale with a motion-capture animated film starring Ray Windstone, Robin Wright, Crispin Glover, Angelina Jolie and Anthony Hopkins.

Greenberg’s Beowulf joins a large develop slate at Syfy that includes Bryan Singer’s kaiju show Creature at Bay, the Oz-set Dorothy Must Die, and TV versions of 12 Monkeys and Legion — now called Dominion — for future seasons.
